What HPV is

HPV is a group of very common viruses. It's spread through skin-to-skin contact and is not a sign of anything you've done wrong. Having HPV is normal and extremely common.

Why it usually isn't a problem

In most people, the immune system clears HPV on its own, often within a couple of years. It's only when certain higher-risk types persist over a long time that they can lead to cell changes in the cervix, which is exactly what screening is designed to pick up early.

Screening and vaccination

Cervical screening checks for HPV so that any persistent infection can be monitored before problems develop. An HPV vaccination also exists and is offered in Australia. A clinician can explain how both fit together for you.

When to see a specialist

If you've had an HPV-positive screening result, or you have questions about HPV or the vaccine, a clinician can explain what it means and reassure you about the next steps.
