PCOS (PMOS) & Hormonal Conditions

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), now also officially known as polyendocrine metabolic ovarian syndrome (PMOS), is described here using the familiar term PCOS.

PCOS is a common hormonal condition that can affect periods, skin, metabolism and fertility.

This section explains how it's diagnosed and the broad approaches to managing it.

Key points

  • PCOS is diagnosed using recognised criteria, not a single test.
  • It can relate to weight, metabolism and fertility.
  • Management is tailored to your symptoms and goals.

In May 2026, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) was officially renamed polyendocrine metabolic ovarian syndrome (PMOS), to better reflect that it is a whole body hormonal and metabolic condition, not a problem of ovarian cysts. Both names are in use during the transition, and you will still see PCOS widely. This resource uses PCOS and notes PMOS, so the information is easy to find under either name.
