Common causes
Irregular cycles can have several causes. Identifying the reason helps guide what, if anything, is needed.
- Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS)
- Thyroid problems and some other hormonal causes, such as raised prolactin
- Perimenopause
- Stress, significant weight change, or some medications
When it matters
A new or persistent change in your cycle, very infrequent periods, or irregular bleeding with other symptoms is worth reviewing.
Diagnosis: what to expect
A specialist may take a history, arrange blood tests (including hormones and thyroid), and suggest a pelvic ultrasound to look for causes such as PCOS.
When to see a specialist
If your cycle has changed persistently, or irregular periods come with other symptoms, a review can help identify the cause and options.
