How it differs from endometriosis

In endometriosis, lining-like tissue grows outside the uterus; in adenomyosis, it's within the uterine muscle. The two can occur together, and symptoms can overlap.

Symptoms

Adenomyosis may cause heavier periods, more painful periods, or a feeling of pressure. Some people have few symptoms.

Diagnosis and options

Diagnosis often involves history, examination and imaging such as ultrasound. Management focuses on controlling symptoms, using options decided together with a clinician.

When to see a specialist

If you have heavy or painful periods, a specialist can assess whether adenomyosis (or a related condition) is involved and discuss options.
